According to a new report from Counterpoint Research, premium smartphone sales hit record levels in 2021, with Apple taking the top spot in all regions studied by Counterpoint.
The premium smartphone market – defined by Counterpoint as a phone priced above $400 – grew 24% compared to 2020. This is the highest growth rate ever for high-end smartphones and overall the market as a whole. Smartphones grew 7% in the same period.
Counterpoint’s director of research, Tarun Pathak, said:The growth of the premium smartphone market in 2021 is driven by a combination of factors, including user demand, OEM strategy, and supply chain.”
Pathak also says that the demand for 5G has driven growth and that companies including Apple are “actively capitalize on the high-end market gap left by Huawei, especially in China and Western Europe.”
Apple does not publish sales figures, so all data is compiled by Counterpoint from its own sources. Accordingly, in 2021, Apple has occupied 60% of the high-end smartphone market share, the last time it achieved this figure was 2017.
According to Counterpoint, this is partly because the slow launch of the iPhone 12 series has pushed sales into 2021. Counterpoint predicts that in the long term, Apple will continue to maintain its leading position in the high-end market. Besides, they predict that more and more popular folding screen smartphones will impact this market.
